August 18, 2009

The website www.AbleGamer.com wants to organize a panel at SXSW 2010. The title of the panel, “Thoughtless Design Leaves Disabled Gamers Logged Out” would discuss such issues as:

What issues surrond video game accessibility?

-What issues do gamers with disabilities face depending on the type of disability they have?

-What are some concrete ways to create more accessible games?

-What support communities exist for gamers with disabilities?

-What developer communities exist for game designers to learn more about issues disabled gamers face?

-What types of controllers do disabled gamers typically use and where is this technology available?

-Why is game accessibility important to people with disabilities and what benefit(s) could there be?

-How does accessible game design help non-disabled gamers?

-How do game designers and creative directors feel that accessibility impacts their designs in negative and positive ways?

-What are some examples of commercial games that have been commercially successful and included accessibility features?

FAQ's

What is SXSW 2010? South by Southwest (SXSW) is a set of interactive, film, and music festivals and conferences that take place every spring in Austin, Texas. SXSW first began in 1987 and is centered on the downtown Austin Convention Center. Each of the three parts runs relatively independently, with different start and end dates.

How are the panels formed: SXSW uses a voting interface called PanelPicker. It is a simple-to-use web application gives the online community the power to browse through all programming proposals and vote on which ideas they feel are most appropriate for SXSWeek 2010 (March 12-20). Users are likewise encouraged to comment on the proposals that they find most engaging and captivating.
