New Hampshire Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Advisory Council was established in 1997. It was created when the New Hampshire State Legislature passed bill (RSA 137-K) with the purpose to support injury prevention and help meet the needs of individuals with brain and spinal cord injuries who would otherwise by dependent upon the public for their care and rehabilitation.

The legislation establishing the Advisory Council outlined these primary functions:

• To identify unmet needs

• To investigate the needs, indentify gaps in services, and to issue an annual report to the Governor, Speaker of the House, Senate President, and the Commissioner of Health and Human Services each year

• To recommend priorities and criteria for disbursement of monies

• To consider the feasibility of establishing a brain and spinal cord injury trust fund

• To hold at least two public hearings annually to generate input from the public on unmet needs

• To review the status of the brain injury program established under RSA 137-K and any other program that would come under the jurisdiction of the Council

Currently this committee is looking for new members to represent the consumers that have spinal cord injury. The committee meets approximately 4 times a year, plus attending community events approximately 2 times during the year.
